What Are NEMA Enclosures?

The National Electrical Manufacturer Association(NEMA) has a standardized enclosure rating system. It is used to categorize electrical enclosures in the USA based on where they can be installed and whether they can contain hazardous events like explosions. This system is essential in creating uniformity in the industry for manufacturers and users.

Supply All Types of NEMA Enclosures

Type 1

NEMA 1 type enclosures are recommended for indoor environments. They limit human contact with hazardous electrical parts. Their ingress protection (IP) only shields the equipment in the enclosure from solid dirt.

Type 3

This type of enclosure is ideal for indoor and outdoor installations. It prevents hazardous human contact with electrical components and protects the equipment from getting damaged by wind-blown dust, rain, or snow.

Type 3S

These enclosures are eligible for indoor and outdoor installations. They deliver protection against dirt, rain, sleet, wind-blown dust, and snow. The encased equipment remains functional even when the enclosure is coated in ice.

Type 4X

NEMA 4X IP-rated enclosures are ideal for protecting against limiting accidental human contact and:

  • Wind-blown dust
  • Sleet
  • Snow
  • Hose-sprayed water
  • Falling dirt
  • Corrosion
  • The enclosed equipment will remain safe even if snow settles on the enclosure service.

    Type 6

These enclosures are ideal for preventing accidental contact between electrical components and personnel. They also protect against:

  • Falling dirt
  • Hose-directed water
  • Water entry from temporary submersion
  • Damage caused by ice forming on the surface of the enclosure
  • Type 7&8

NEMA 7 enclosures are limited to indoor applications while NEMA 8s are applicable indoors or outdoors. However, they are both approved for use in hazardous locations included in NFPA 70.

    Type 13

NEMA 13 enclosures are for indoor application and prevent accidental human contact with electrical components. They equally protect against:

  • Falling dirt
  • High-velocity dust, lint, fibers
  • Spraying, splashing or seeping non-corrosive coolant, water, oil
  • Type 2

This type of closure is also designed for indoor installations. It provides protection from falling dirt, dripping liquids, and minimal splashing of liquids on the surface.

    Type 3R

NEMA 3R enclosures can be installed indoors or outdoors and provide similar protections to those of NEMA 3 enclosures. It, however, provides less protection against wind-blown dust.

    Type 4

NEMA 4 IP-rated closures are ideal for limiting accidental human contact and:

  • Wind-blown dust
  • Sleet
  • Snow
  • Hose-sprayed water
  • Falling dirt
  • Type 5

NEMA 5 type enclosures are suitable for indoor installations. It provides protection from:

  • Falling dirt
  • Dripping liquids
  • Minimal splashing of liquids on the surface
  • Dust
  • Lint
  • Fibers
  • Type 6P

NEMA 6P enclosures are applicable indoors and outdoors. They prevent accidental human contact with electrical components. They also protect against:

  • Falling dirt
  • Hose-directed water
  • Damage caused by ice forming on the surface of the enclosure
  • Water entry from temporary submersion
  • Type 12 & 12K

NEMA 12 & 12K enclosures are built with knockouts and are recommended for indoor installation. They provide electrical components some protection against:

  • Hazardous materials
  • Falling dirt
  • High-velocity dust, lint, fibers
  • Dripping or light splashing liquids
